With the WPIAL Women’s Soccer stage dwindling in time, the focus has shifted to securing a top-four spot in each stage in order to secure a regional playoff spot in two and a half weeks.
There will be 35 women’s soccer games on Wednesday, two in Division 1-A, with the top four teams going head-to-head.
First-placed Springdale will host the fourth-placed Sierra Catholics, while Seton LaSalle will visit Greensburg Central Catholics for second place.
The Dynamo went 7-1 in the quarter to seal a playoff spot and could take a big step toward the division title with a win. They beat the Eagles 7-1 at Sierra Catholic Church last month.
Seton LaSalle lost at home to the Greensburg Central Catholics 4-2 on September 12. However, the Rebels beat Springdale 5-1, the Dynamo’s only divisional loss, and the Centurions ended a five-game winning streak at Springdale.
Championship rematch
The two women’s volleyball teams that competed for the regional gold medal last fall met on Wednesday, but the stakes were not high.
Last November, North Catholic beat rival Avonworth 3-1 to win the WPIAL Class 2A title for the second time in a row.
Over the next two years, the realignment separated the two volleyball powerhouses as North Catholic had risen to 3A while Avonworth remained at 2A.
Both have aspirations for gold as they prepare to face each other in a non-divisional game in Avonworth on Wednesday.
The Trojans went 7-0 in the 5-3A quarter, while the Antelopes went 9-0 in the 4-2A.
Also on Wednesday in women’s volleyball, Central Valley visits Hopewell in 4-2A.
The Warriors are third in the division with a 5-2 record and two games ahead of the Vikings, who lost fourth place.
Hockey Showdown
The two top regional hockey teams will meet for the second time on Wednesday when Latrobe host Penn-Trafford in a 2A game.
On Sept. 12, the Warriors beat the Wildcats 4-2 at home.
The two teams met in the WPIAL 2A semifinals last fall, with Penn-Trafford winning 1-0.
Penn-Trafford won its sixth consecutive regional championship.
